Welcome to Rotorua
Walks & Parks
Get Outdoors!
Discover the region's walks, parks, beaches, lakes or rivers.
About 105 kilometres from Hamilton, Rotorua has a population of around 66,000. The city sits on the shore of Lake Rotorua, one of sixteen lakes in the area formed by hundreds of thousands of years of eruptions from the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The area is renowned for its geothermal activity (and strong sulphurous smell!) and top of any activity list is to see the bubbling mud pools that are around the region for yourself. The Waimangu Volcanic Valley offers a first hand insight into the devastation caused by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera and is a great place to discover steaming volcanic crater s and bubbling, spitting pools of mud!
But Rotorua has more than just geysers and bubbling mud pools to offer families. A visit to a Maori cultural show will entertain and educate and you can try a hangi where food is cooked the traditional Maori way underground.
The gondola cable car and Skyline attraction is a must-do (kids love riding the luge!) or you can get lost in a giant maze, get adventurous at the Agroventures Adventure Park, download your own family-friendly, Rotorua treasure hunt, or simply hang by the lake – ideal for picnics and swims!
