Gisborne is situated in Eastland, on the East Cape. The city is just three hours drive up the coast from Napier and is the first city in the world to see the sun each day and the region’s Maori name aptly means ‘the coast upon which the sun shines across the water’. It was in Gisborne that Captain Cook made his first landing in New Zealand, naming the area Poverty Bay because of his inability to find fresh provisions. Nowadays, Gisborne has plenty to offer the holidaymaker with warm summers and mild winters, beautiful beaches and a relaxed lifestyle.
East Cape
East Cape is one of the most isolated areas of the country with rugged coastlines, a rich Maori heritage and very laid back, beach lifestyle. The winding coastal road round NZ's East Cape is a spectacular, scenic journey, about 385km long and passes through small beachside communites. A journey Out East must include a trip to the East Cape Lighthouse to experience the first sunrise in the world. It takes about 30 minutes to drive out to the lighthouse from Te Araroa and there are about 700 “easy” steps to the top. The view is well worth the climb.
