Queenstown Library Activities
Welcoming and friendly, the Queenstown Library has been a mainstay with our fast growing Wakatipu community! Located in town centre, and close to local schools, the library is well loved by local and travelling families providing a warm and inclusive space.
Pop in for a chilled out arvo, reading to your young one in our cosy children's area and stay for the colouring-in, toys and free children programmes.
Wriggle and Rhyme
Wriggle & Rhyme is a music-based active movement programme for children aged 0-2. Offered in partnership with Sport Otago, Wriggle & Rhyme is designed to promote brain development through active movement and music.
It also has the unintended benefit of parents socialising afterwards!
Our storytime sessions are designed for pre-schoolers aged 2-5. We entertain both children and parents with fun voices and favourite picture books.
Storytime encourages a lifelong love of reading, helps develop listening skills and is a great place for parents to meet.
The Queenstown branch includes an age appropriate craft to keep little hands busy.
A very popular after school activity targeting our primary school aged patrons. While we mostly let children lead with LEGO™ Club, the librarian will sometimes offer challenges and showcase LEGO™ books for inspiration.
LEGO ™ Club is a great activity where children engage with each other, learn to manage resources and personalities in a fun social setting.
Reading to Dogs
Reading out loud can be intimidating and scary to a new reader. Reading to Dogs aims to help children improve their oral literacy skills, self-confidence and self-esteem by reading to a gentle, non-judgemental, therapy dog. Comforted by the relaxed and enjoyable environment, we find some children come to enjoy the canine cuddles. However, for those struggling readers, reading to a judgment- free animal is safe and free from criticism.
This is a free programme delivered at several of our branches by Outreach Therapy Pets, supported by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and St John New Zealand.
Join us for good old fashioned fun during our Games Club! With a selection of games to choose from your child can learn to be a good winner, a graceful loser, how to play independently and in a team.
The library is a great inclusive and neutral space to have fun wth other children and have practical experience with sportsmanship.
