About Te Aroha
Te Aroha is a little gem of a town, situated in the Thames Valley of
New Zealand’s North Island. This picturesque Edwardian spa town is
nestled at the base of Mt Te Aroha - the ‘Mountain of Love’ according
to Maori legend. Te Aroha is famous for its hot mineral soda water
spas, massages, free Hot Soda Water Footpool and the Mokena Geyser, the
world’s only hot soda geyser. You can find all of these as well as
surviving Edwardian buildings in The Domain of Te Aroha. In Te Aroha
town you can visit the oldest pipe organ in the Southern Hemisphere,
play a round of golf, fish for trout or go shopping for arts and crafts
from the many original artists now residing in Te Aroha.
The
Te Aroha hostel is the closest backpackers to the magical location for
Hobbiton from The Lord of the Ring films. Other great places to explore
in the area around Te Aroha include The Wairongomai Valley, The Wairere
Falls and the Karangahake Gorge. These places offer beautiful hiking
trails and glimpses into New Zealand’s fascinating goldmining history.
There is also a wide variety of tramping options accessible from the
YHA Te Aroha hostel, including a climb to the summit of Mt Te Aroha for
fantastic 360 degree views. At only a short 2-3 hour drive from
Auckland, why wouldn’t you come to stay at Te Aroha.
