Auckland - the City of Sails lies between two harbours and is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of just over a million. The centre of commerce in New Zealand, it is made up of four main suburbs – Auckland City, Manukau City, North Shore City and Waitakere City. The central business district is based around Queen Street in Auckland City and this is where you will find the Sky Tower and main shopping area. Waitakere City has beaches, vineyards and bushwalks and North Shore is best known for its laidback lifestyle and sandy beaches while Manukau city is home to the famous Rainbow’s End theme park. With so much to see and do throughout the area from dormant and extinct volcanoes, beaches and rainforests to shopping, markets and museums, there is plenty to keep everyone entertained! Animal lovers will enjoy Butterfly Creek, Sheepworld and Auckland Zoo, while there is go-karting or all year round skiing at Snowplanet for the more adventurous. Visit the awesome Stardome Observatory or the magical underwater world at Kelly Tarlton’s or take advantage of one of Auckland’s many safe swimming beaches. Auckland certainly has something to offer everyone of all ages.
Northland - Known as the 'first region of New Zealand', Northland stretches from Auckland to the northern tip of the mainland. It is the closest province to the equator (about the same as Spain or California) and is generally blessed with warm, sub-tropical temperatures. The main city in Northland is Whangarei, with a population of around 80,000. One of the most visited holiday spots in New Zealand is in Northland - the beautiful Bay of Islands. It is known as the birthplace of New Zealand and is encircled by 144 islands. The laid-back town of Paihia is your main starting point for exporing the Bay of Islands. Further north you'll find wild beaches, secluded coves and some of NZ's most spectacular untouched native forest. Northland is also rich in cultural heritage and includes NZ's most historic site of all - the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, in 1840.
