 The Hauraki Gulf There are over 50 islands in the the Hauraki Gulf which lies between the Waitemata Harbour and Coromandel Peninsula. The two largest of these islands are Waiheke and Great Barrier Island and these are easy to access by ferry from downtown Auckland. Other islands require permits to land on them.
Waiheke Island Take a day trip or stay for a few days to enjoy all that this island has to offer. Waiheke Island is the second largest island in the Hauraki Gulf at 26 km long and approximately 19 km wide. Just 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland, and with a population of around 7000 people, this holiday haven has beautiful beaches, wonderful walks and native forest reserves and plenty of family restaurants, cafes and fast food outlets.
 Devonport Only 15 minutes by car, or 10 minutes by ferry from Auckland’s Queen Street, is the historic seaside village of Devonport, home of New Zealand’s Navy. Devonport was one of the earliest settled areas of Auckland and here you will find restaurants, shopping and good swimming beaches for the children. The Village Market on the second Sunday of every month features entertainment, crafts and food stalls to entertain the whole family.
Albany Albany is 15 km northwest of the City Centre and is one of the citys newest suburbs. It is home to Auckland’s largest shopping centre – the Albany Mega Centre and the North Harbour Stadium; yet Albany is only minutes away from sandy beaches and country lanes.
Takapuna This popular beach has a reserve and picnic area and is only a short walk to cafes and shops and ten minutes drive from Auckland and the North Shore. Said to be the best urban beach in Auckland, the one kilometre beach at Takapuna offers safe swimming and white sand as well as beautiful views of the harbour on a fine day.
