WALKING TRACKS AROUND THE PORT HILLS Earthquake update for Port Hills Reserves (as of 15/09/2011)
Many tracks and reserves remain closed due to rock fall hazard including sections of the Summit Road. Work is continuing to assess and remove dangerous rocks in many of the reserves. Care should also be observed in areas that remain open as hazards are not always immediately obvious. Hazard indicators include signs of rocks having moved, cracks and slumping of the ground or rock debris at the base of cliffs.
Walkers are advised to remain well clear of the tops and bottoms of coastal cliffs, bluffs and rocky outcrops. Boaties are also advised to remain well clear of tall coastal cliff areas. Wet winter conditions may increase ground moisture which can mean more slumping and the likelihood of slips and slope instabilities will increase.
Please obey any closure signs. Areas are closed due to significant rock fall risk and the fact that rocks are being rolled and blown up by contractors.
Work is currently underway to make safe the following closed track and reserve networks:
The process for making these areas safe does take time and is affected by the subsequent seismic events we are having. Please be patient and observe the closed status of these area while we work within them.
The survey work is picking up many loose and dangerous rocks/ bluffs, above these tracks. As part of the survey work rocks are being rolled or made safe by repositioning. However many need to be removed (blasted) netted, or bolted back to surrounding bedrock. Specialist contractors are being brought in to do this work. Other areas will be left to ‘season'. This means some reserves will remain closed for the winter and assessed after the wetter months. At the moment it is simply too dangerous to work within some of the track areas.
The Summit Rd remains closed between Cavendish Saddle and the top of Rapaki Track. This closure is in place under the CERA legislation and significant penalties may occur if people are found within the cordoned area. This section of the road is under very high risk of rockfall and is also subject to remedial work making this a very unsafe area.
